When we face tough times, we often think that the only way to get through them is to fight and struggle. But sometimes there’s a better way: let the wave carry you. Perhaps it’s time to learn how to surf!
Surfing has been dated to go back as far as the 12th Century, where cave paintings depicted people riding on waves. It was always seen as a sport but oftentimes reserved for royalty or the elite amongst the Polynesian culture. There is a skill and an art to maneuvering through thousands of gallons of water.
The sea can be unpredictable, however, surfers seek out the unpredictability of the ocean, in pursuit of their next wave. Life presents its own waves, that come as a result of conditions changing in our environment. “Surfing” may not be a perspective that everyone thinks of when they think about the waves they encounter in life. However, it sure does feel like it sometimes! So maybe we should learn how to surf.
This week I’ll be sharing a few tips that correlate life and surfing, that could be beneficial to overcoming adversities (waves) in your life.
“Surfing may not be a perspective that everyone thinks of when they think about the waves they encounter in life. However, it sure does feel like it sometimes! So maybe we should learn how to surf”!
1. Understand that waves are inevitable and they’re actually what makes surfing possible. Your goals are going to have problems, hurdles, or obstacles. If you’re venturing through this body of water called life without the expectation of encountering waves, then you’re setting yourself up for failure! The bigger the wave the bigger the reward! Big goals come with big problems. Remember that.
2. Learning how to Stand is imperative. If you can’t stand up on your own in the waters of life, then how will you stand up to problems? And if you can’t stand up to the waves in your life, then there’s no way you can ride them! How you stand means everything! Balance is a major component to standing as well. Many of us lose balance in life when we are faced with problems. But being able to remain balanced is what allows us to ride the waves.
Life is like a sea of waves. We all know that we can’t stop the waves from coming, but what we can do is learn to surf them and use these tips to help us ride those waves with ease. You never know when you may need this perspective on life. So why not start practicing now?
