When is the last time you heard someone say that their partner, spouse, or significant other makes them feel joy? How about the unpopular (and probably never used phase) “money can’t buy you joy”. Which in actuality is probably what the quote should say but to keep people in pursuit of happiness versus joy is a lot more lucrative.

The reason is that Joy is an internal mechanism. Joy is not something that is obtained from outside factors, like happiness (which if we’re being fair money, probably can buy you a lot of happiness) Joy is finding peace in the rain because you have an umbrella, peace is a fruit of the spirit obtained from being connected to the divine vine. One may say they “enjoy” their job which “en” a greek prefix means within. Therefore they have found peace and a sense of inward joy from their work. Rarely is happy used in a work sense and if it is it eventually fades or transitions into joy.

“Happiness is an inconsistent employee who only manages to stay employed because when it’s actually at work it’s doing a great job!

Happiness is something that is mostly stimulated and regulated by outside factors. It’s vital to know the difference because I believe that if joy and happiness were employees, then happiness is an inconsistent employee who only manages to stay employed because when it’s at actuallywork it’s doing a great job! On the other hand, Joy is consistent, loyal, trustworthy, and works better when you work for it. Understanding the difference will prevent a lot of stress and anxiety in many situations.
