Did you know that all trees shed their leaves? The process can be difficult to see among broadleaf and conifer evergreens because these are the trees that appear green all year round. Other trees shed their leaves annually during the autumn season. It’s a beautiful process, watching the leaves change colors in the fall, but it’s also a precursor that change has occurred and another change is on the horizon.
When we see trees shed leaves and change colors, it is literally because the tree is stressed and by shedding leaves the trees are able to conserve their energy and water. We find beauty in this transition, yet we struggle to observe the correlation between the trees and our own seasons of Autumn. Tree’s know well before the winter months (and the fall) that a change is coming. trees can feel it in their environment, through climate changes and the DNA of the tree help this understanding to take place.
” It’s a beautiful process, watching the leaves change colors in the fall, but it’s also a precursor that change has occurred or on the horizon.”
Sometimes we can be too smart for our own good, by not realizing our own seasons are changing. Sometimes we simply fail to prepare for the season that we KNOW is sure to come. If the tree never sheds its leaves then it would eventually die. The funny thing is that you wouldn’t notice the tree has died internally or externally until long after, the same can be said for us.
